Can a Physical Therapist Come to My House?

What does a physical therapist do during a home visit?
A mobile physical therapist does more than hand out exercises. The first visit usually includes a review of symptoms, health history, precautions, medications relevant to movement, and the activities the patient wants to improve.
The physical examination may include strength, range of motion, walking, balance, transfers, stairs, and task-specific movement. Treatment can begin during the same visit when appropriate, followed by a home plan and measurable goals.
Why would someone choose PT at home?
Some patients choose mobile care because driving, parking, or waiting is difficult after surgery or during a painful episode. Others have demanding work or family schedules, or they benefit from practicing in the exact environment where movement is challenging.
A home visit can address the patient’s actual chair, stairs, bed setup, walking route, assistive device, or workspace. This can make recommendations easier to understand and apply.
Is home-based outpatient PT right for everyone?
No single care setting fits everyone. A patient may need emergency care, physician evaluation, home health, inpatient rehabilitation, a clinic with specialized equipment, or another service instead.
