Mobile Physical Therapy vs Home Health: What Is the Difference?
Mobile physical therapy and home health can both occur in a patient’s residence, but they are not the same. Mobile PT is outpatient physical therapy delivered by a traveling practice. Home health is a separate benefit for eligible patients and may include nursing and several rehabilitation or support disciplines.
What is mobile outpatient physical therapy?
Mobile outpatient PT follows the outpatient rehabilitation model: a physical therapist evaluates the patient, establishes a plan, provides skilled treatment, measures progress, and coordinates with other clinicians when appropriate. The therapist travels to the patient rather than requiring a clinic visit.
Patients generally do not need to be homebound. Coverage follows the requirements that apply to the patient’s outpatient therapy benefit and provider relationship.
What is home health?
Home health is designed for eligible patients who need covered skilled services at home. Under Original Medicare, requirements include a qualifying need, a plan of care, a Medicare-certified home health agency, and homebound certification.
A home health episode may include nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, social work, and home health aide services, depending on the plan and eligibility.
Which setting should I choose?
A medically complex person who is homebound and needs nursing or multiple disciplines may fit home health. Someone medically stable who needs ongoing one-on-one outpatient rehabilitation but values home convenience may fit mobile outpatient PT. Hospital discharge planners, physicians, therapists, and the patient’s insurer can help clarify the appropriate setting.

Can I receive both at the same time?
Coverage and care-coordination rules can limit overlapping services. Tell every provider what services you are receiving and ask the payer before assuming both are covered.
Is mobile PT private-pay only?
Not necessarily. PT365 accepts Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield and offers cash-pay care. Coverage depends on the individual benefit and claim requirements.
Does mobile PT provide nursing?
No. PT365 provides outpatient physical therapy. It is not a home health agency and does not replace nursing or other needed disciplines.
